It’s simple. There are movie genres and there are cartoon genres. Simple.
There are a lot of different cartoons out there. I mean, look at Graphic Novels. Most of them aren’t funny at all. Watchmen for example is definitely not funny or cute in any way whatsoever. I enjoy anime for some of the great story lines and I love art. I think illustration is a beautiful thing and there’s some great anime out there that has drama, sci-fi, psychological stuff going on. Also, there’s just some great suspensful shows and ones that are fun with action/violence/gore. Think of the Batman movies. They wouldn’t have existed without a cartoon behind it…the concepts, the art, the design…it’s brilliant to me.
You’re confused because your thinking is flawed (be it ignorance or just from not having someone properly explain the facts to you) Anime =/= cartoon.
After all Anime means “(japanese) Animation”. And just like here in America, not all things animated are cartoons or kids shows.
Though a good portion of anime is humorous, there are plenty of very good drama animes to be had, along with plot filled animes, many of which are made for more mature viewers. There are also ‘adult’ animes.

Anime isn’t like American cartoons where they are all pretty much comedy. Like the first poster said, there are many different genres of anime, so there is really something for everyone. Comedy, horror, romance, drama, its all there. Give it a chance, you might like it ^_^
immm not an adult but anime and cartoons arent the same, the difference is…..the name, the difference with anime and cartoons is that when you see anime its suppose to have a story-line and entertianment, but when you watch cartoons what you watch is for only pretty much entertianment
Anime is just a medium. Granted, there are a ton of anime aimed at little kids, but then there are countless aimed at older audiences, many of them even getting an R rating.
And the fact that animation is limited to comedy is largely a Western contruct. I ask you, why MUST something that is animated be funny? Why can’t they be more than that? After all, no one argues that you can’t draw a serious picture or painting, but the second you animate that picture or painting, it must be childish and immature?
I never really understood that concept.
One interesting piece of history that I see is that in the past, didn’t people view comic books as only supposing to be funny and for kids? But the second movies like X-men, Spiderman, and the new Batman movies came out, it suddenly became alright for a grown adult to be an X-men fan.
Isn’t this interesting?
I don’t see anything wrong with people out of high school watching anime. In fact, there are many anime movies that are R rated for violence and disturbing content. Not all anime are cute, funny, or light hearted like Sailor Moon and Naruto. It’s really just the same as someone watching Indy or foreign films. It’s all about genres. Cartoons don’t have to be funny for you to want to watch them. Most of the anime that I’m into are psychological thrillers such as Paprika which was released just a few years ago in all major theater chains. If you’re open to the challenge watch it and then decide for yourself if cartoons can also be considered as psychological horror thrillers. A lot of the people I know who didn’t like anime were very impressed by this movie.
The person above made a good point too. Watchmen, Batman, Spiderman and Xmen have all become revered and they’re also comic figures that have made it to the big screen. Anime has been turned into live action movies as well. It’s not any different from any american-made comic.
Funny I came across this because I am actually doing a project on adult animation. Now I don’t mean adult as in Porn, but rather serious themes, graphic violence, and adult situations.
Well anywho, adult animation in the united states really got a start in the 1970s with a cartoon called Fritz the Cat that was incredibly inappropriate for children and had an X-Rating. In Japan however there weren’t the same restrictions so cartoons weren’t really classified as just childish. Pretty much it is another medium for filmmakers to tell their stories.
There are tons of anime that don’t have even a shred of childish antics, if you are curious to what I am talking about I would recommend you check out an Anime called DeathNote. It is a story about a man who finds a notebook and discovers that if someone’s name is written in that book they will die. This catapults him into a self-rightous journey where he plays the role of god deciding who will live and die. In fact the protagonist is more of a villain and there is a dubbed version available as well.
Hoped this all helped
Well, how can adults like reality TV which is the stupid hell-hole cr@p I’ve EVER seen?
Japanese cartoons or anime it at least entertaining with an actual plot. Yes, in some cases it may be stupid, but it’s funny-stupid not “what the hell”-stupid.
Look, anime isn’t a comedy. Cartoons don’t have to be funny. I mean Phinese and Ferb isn’t really all that funny. It’s like anime; it’s just entertaining. It was made for entertainment – not necessarily amusement.
im 30, and iam not what u picture ppl that watch anime.. i love it. in fact some anime series i liked better than any movie i have ever seen.
Clannad.
code geass.
death note.
Blood +
hellsing.
and many more that were really really good.
are you saying anime isn’t funny?
also i think most anime is japanese…
depending on the genre anime can be for anyone theres even specific names for some like
Shonen = Anime or Manga for Boys
Shoujo = Anime or manga for Girls
cartoons are funny to those who have only seen american cartoons the rest of the world has more than just funny cartoons
I’m still under 18, so I guess this doesn’t apply to me, but I like anime because of the animation and story, it’s simply not something you’ll find elsewhere.
And anime is way better at showing fight scenes. It’s always fun seeing people getting beaten up with flashy moves and punches going 500 mph.

And anime generally is funny, but it’s not usually the main focus of the story, unlike most American cartoons.
I am a teen, so it might be hard for another point of view.. anime is not like bugs bunny running and tricking Elmer. There are comedy animes, and there are some animes that are really for young adults/adults, because of violence or emotion they put into it.
anime is different from cartoons. for example naruto has violence and blood while cartoons don’t. i would say anime is for mature audiences and cartoons are fro little kids but adults could watch it as well. and to add to that they have different genres as well so there are a whole lot of varieties to choose from. and they are interesting
Their are different types of genres to an anime like a book would have. You always see funny anime probably because teens of course, prefer someting funny and exciting to watch but that doesn’t mean that all animes are like that. I mean, how can a teen watch an adult anime?

Don’t you watch movies or TV series? Animes are just the same… different stories, different genre…
