Asking a guy to a dance???

I am Russian, and he is Japanese.
He is not that cute but really funny, and nice. He is kind of a geek, I am not, but I am afaid to ask him because what if he says no, or everyone at my high school thinks I am a dork, or a freak for asking him. (I am a freshman)
I usually go for Mexican or Russian guys but I am kinda drawn to him. We always have really great conversations after lunch like about pear jucie, and high frectouse corn sypup. We sit at the same lunch table.
Should I ask him, and will me rep be on the line?
All of my friends think I am way out of his league (every one tells me I am hot, and really pretty, I don’t think so, and I don’t care about that bullshitt), but he has a really cute personality?
I asked him if he is going with anyone, and he said that he is not. Do you think he would even say yes? And would my peers, and friends think I was a freak for asking? What if he says no???
